Virtual right to work checks extended

The government has extended the COVID-19 temporary right to work checks until 31 August 2021. This extension follows the government’s announcement on 14 June 2021 to extend the date for easing lockdown restrictions and social distancing measures.

Physical face-to-face checks were scheduled to resume on 21 June 2021 but this extension means virtual checks will continue until the end of August 2021.

The temporary changes that remain in effect until 31 August 2021 are:

  • Checks can continue to be conducted via video call.
  • Job applicants and existing workers may submit scanned documents or a photo of documents for checking using email or a mobile app instead of sending the originals.
  • Employers should use the Employer Checking Service if a prospective or existing employee cannot provide any of the accepted documents.

Employers must continue to check documents as prescribed in the right to work checks – employer’s guide or use the online right to work checking service.
